General care and maintenance

Tree ferns prefer not to be in a windy location.
The location should one which does not attract the midday sun.

Watering - always water the tree fern from the crown.
The trunk and fronds can be sprayed in dry conditions.

Feeding - A slow release granular fertiliser, or a general purpose liquid feed can be used.

Protection - There are several ways to protect tree ferns in winter:-

Surround the trunk with an insulating material i.e. polystyrene, then pack loose straw between the trunk and the polystyrene and into the crown, cap the crown with some polystyrene. In prolonged dry weather conditions, water will need to be poured down behind the protecting layer.

The top 18" of the tree fern can be protected, as above.

The trunk can be completely protected, and then the whole thing can be surrounded with bales of straw.
